Singapore Day 2008
Singapore Day was held in Melbourne, Australia this year and of course all we patriotic (hungry) melbies were in attendance.
i was really surprised to see so many - maybe 10,000 singaporeans in melbourne - or maybe they weren't all fellow countrymen... afterall, all asians look alike ; ) only joking!!
can you spot the little hainanese chickens hanging in the makeshift hawker stall?
there was also hokkien mee, char kuay teow, satay, bbq chicken wing, chilli crab, mee siam, nasi biryani, bak kut teh, mee soto, nasi lemak, minced pork noodle, claypot rice, spaghetti bolognese(not too sure why this is also considered 'singaporean cuisine'), kaya toast, ice kachang and chendol.
we queued for 50 minutes under the sun for a tasting sized plate of hokkien mee and chicken rice and a massive sun burn. we basically spent most of our day in the food queues for more more more more and more chicken rice... yummmy...
sp went with the singapore day theme in red and white; shown here eating the sample size laksa.
i stocked up on cash only to find out that nothing was for sale ... so i loaded up on the freebies instead. we received a t shirt, childrens' story books, erasers, overseas calling cards, heaps of singaporean propaganda/brochures, bottled 'pub' (public utilities board branded) water - pure singapore tap water captured in a plastic bottle, yeo's herb tea, picnic mat, toy binoculars, lollies and even a jar of kaya. -mi!
